Rooted in the Past, Growing with the FutureIt’s not all about going back in time. Remember those oak trees? Houston Oaks’ commitment to preserving that Old South feeling has led to a program of planting 100 new oak trees every year for the next five years. Houston Oaks has brought in a full-time arborist, built a new family pool and added a ninehole executive and family golf course, and will keep development to just 20 residential lots of an acre-plus, wrapped around that executive course with either golf or lake views. The future of Houston Oaks Golf & Country Club is all about growing with families that choose the more relaxed lifestyle of this unique slice of heaven on earth, and groups looking for that peaceful getaway for their outing, family or company picnic, wedding or other special event. Plummer’s ParadiseIt all begins with a great golf course. Ralph Plummer’s name might not ring the bells that a Ross or a MacKenzie or the Jones’ and Dye’s and Fazio’s do, but he truly is a Texas design legend. His fingerprints are all over Houston’s Memorial Park, the Cypress Creek Course at Champions Golf Club, Jamaica’s famous Tryall Golf and Beach Club, Preston Trail and Prestonwood in Dallas. He did much of the work for John Bredemus at Colonial in Fort Worth and collaborated with Robert Trent Jones on the revitalization of Shady Oaks, the famous home of Ben Hogan. All of that experience and Plummer’s design style of courses that flow with the land are not contrived, and with more substance than meets the eye, are evident at Houston Oaks.
New Superintendent Junior Escobar, with 28 years of experience at other Houston-area courses, has revitalized the condition of the layout to the best it’s ever been. Only 6,400 yards from the back tees, Houston Oaks forces golfers to think their way around the course, not just overpower it. It also helps to bring a solid short game and some imagination around the small, tilted greens. A perfect example is the very first hole, a short par-4 less than 320 yards from the tips. Strategic placement of two of those great old oaks guarding the fairway in the landing area might force either a bold gamble or a smart layup. The par-5 second is reachable in two, but one of the course’s many lakes just happens to be about 265 yards out on the left side of the fairway and there are two more large oaks to negotiate on the approach. The toughest stretch of the front nine, stout par-4s at the fourth, fifth and sixth holes, might just make your day, if you can thread the needle or hit it high and soft with your approach at #4, avoid the right-side water at #5 and steer it around the huge oaks guarding the entrance at #6. You will very likely hit four different clubs into Houston Oaks’ four par-3s. The ninth hole is considered the most challenging with water front-right and two more large oaks in back. The par-5s could be your scoring holes, but there’s risk to the reward if your eyes are drawn to the lake short-right at the 11th or you rattle the ball around in the huge oaks in the fairway at 16.
If you’re still behind and are getting strokes, the final two holes will give you a chance with a pair of great 400-yardplus par-4s that are two of the four toughest holes on the course. The 17th not only has a bunker in the landing area but two huge oaks on the left and two more on the right. The 18th teases big hitters with a 285-yard carry to the peninsula where the green is located on this sharp dogleg left. But hit it short and you’re wet. The smart play is to hit it 210 to 250 off the tee and then make the sharp left turn to the home hole. Amenities to Live ForAhh, home. The gorgeously remodeled Main Hall truly embodies Old World elegance and Texas tradition. From its fully-stocked Golf Shop, with all the latest equipment, apparel and accessories, to meeting and banquet rooms with views of the scenic lakes and majestic oaks, to a bar and grill that has a menu of popular favorites and refreshing libations, the Oaks offers it all. Most of all, the professional staff in the clubhouse has your every need in mind and promises the most personal service, inside and outside.
Outside? Here’s were Houston Oaks separates itself from any other course in the area and really puts the word “special” in special events whether for groups of 30 or 3,000. All of those oaks, and two large park areas (one is 60 acres, the other 20 acres) complete with lakes for catch-and-release fishing, beach volleyball, tennis and playground equipment, provide the perfect place for that large family picnic or reunion. Houston Oaks recently hosted an all-day event with a private school in the area and have experience with large client appreciation gatherings as well. Groups with a desire for much more than golf will love the many options of Houston Oaks, including a “Fun Specialist” to help organize games and activities. Weddings at Houston Oaks are incomparable. With access to horse and mule-drawn carriages and the stunning natural setting beside a lake and under a canopy of century-old oaks creates an atmosphere that will never be forgotten. With the newly-opened executive/family 9-hole course, a new director of golf who’ll be stressing player development particularly for junior players, and the new family-style swimming pool and fishing opportunities (3-pound bass are caught and released daily out of the ponds), Houston Oaks wants to grow with its families. Aiming for a mixture of outside and member play, Houston Oaks is limiting memberships, but is offering very affordable opportunities with surprisingly low initiation fees.
Houston Oaks Golf & Country Club is someplace special. Whether it’s a place for your golf “family,” your work “family,” or your true family, the family at Houston Oaks wants you to feel at home. For more information visit online www.houstonoaks.com or call them at 713-888-0000. |

Even its name conjures up a different time and place. Oaks, hundreds of them, over a century old, unlike anywhere else in Harris County, bring a southern plantation feel to an area just northwest of Houston off US 290 that features not only wonderful golf, but tennis, fishing and family fun on 330 acres near Hockley.
A visit to Houston Oaks might just get you to thinking about something
more permanent. Only 20 residential lots, each over an acre in size,
will be developed at Houston Oaks to maintain the quiet, southern
atmosphere. But the spectacular views from those Estate Homes out
toward the executive course or one of the many lakes will likely
appreciate significantly over time.
