Doofus-Proof Golf A Quick-Read Golf Etiquette Guide
Author: J. Kelly Mione

This book is definitely in the category of “self-help.” After all, who among us would buy a book for a friend called “Doofus-Proof Golf,” at least a friend we want to ever see again? However, for anyone who’s just taking up the game, or maybe wants to send a message in bulk at their next outing, this easy-toread and very funny guide will likely cut down embarrassment and speed up play, two things of which we’re all in favor!

Author J. Kelly Mione is the Marketing Director for Adam Smith Enterprises, developer of Trinity in southwest Pasco County. But this work shows his other true love, communicating his love of the game. As he writes, “You can embarrass yourself two ways on a golf course; with a bad swing and bad etiquette. Most everyone will excuse the bad swing, but few, if any, will excuse bad etiquette.”

Mione takes readers through a round of golf, from what to wear when arriving at the course (Doofus Alert- don’t play in sneakers) to golf cart tips (don’t cast a shadow on your fellow competitor’s ball), to playing more quickly (Doofus Alertdon’t take 5 or 6 practice swings, you’re just wasting everyone’s time and your stock as a golf partner is dropping fast), to a reminder for even the most seasoned player to watch the shots of everyone in the foursome to avoid time-consuming ball searching.

In one twist to the always-let-the-playerfarthest-away play first mantra, Mione is an advocate of “ready golf,” noting that it can save 2-4 minutes every hole though you still shouldn’t play out-of-turn if another member of your foursome is right behind you and also ready. It’s the same with continuous putting. Miss a 10-footer? Tap it in and go, don’t mark and waste everyone’s time.

But, this book isn’t a lecture, it’s the offered help of a friend, whose last bit of advice even suggests that a mulligan on the first tee is OK. But a second? What are you, a doofus?
